“Riverdale” star Charles Melton has revealed his dream of someday acting in a South Korean film.
About the interview: In an interview with Vice’s i-D, the 32-year-old Asian American actor reflected on his journey from teen drama fame from “Riverdale” to potential Oscar nods with “May December.” Melton acknowledged the invaluable experiences gained from his time on “Riverdale,” calling it his “Juilliard,” and expressed gratitude for the relationships formed during the show’s seven-year run.
Love for Korean cinema: Melton, whose mother is originally from South Korea, also shared his newfound fascination with Korean cinema. He expressed admiration for acting legends like Song Kang-ho from “Parasite,” who he says “can say so much without ever saying a word. I find that so inspiring.”
Expressing the desire to act in a Korean film in the future, Melton acknowledged the need to “fine-tune my Korean speaking abilities first.”
On his acting preparation: In “May December,” Melton portrays Joe Atherton Yoo, a character facing complex emotional challenges. Melton discussed his rigorous preparation for the role, including six hours of self-taping and consultations with acting coaches and therapists. He emphasized the importance of the off-season as preparation time, comparing it to his disciplined approach to sports in high school and college.
Oscar buzz: “May December,” which was released in select U.S. theaters on Nov. 17, became available to stream on Netflix on Dec. 1. Melton’s breakout role in the film has so far earned praise from critics and ignited buzz for a potential Oscar nod. According to Golden Derby, 16 expert journalists have tipped him for a nomination, with Shawn Edwards of WDAF-TV Fox going even further by predicting a win for the rising star.
Future filmmaker: He then went on to reveal his plans to venture into directing, teasing a short film dedicated to his sister.
“I just love acting so much right now, but I’m going to do a little short film that I wrote a couple of years ago when I get some time off,” he was quoted saying.
