Charles Melton honors mom in accepting Critics Choice award for ‘May December’

Big win: Melton, 32, received the Breakthrough Performance Award for his work in the Todd Haynes movie, which began streaming on Netflix this month. He opened his acceptance speech by honoring his Korean immigrant mother, Sukyong Melton.

“I stand today in front of my mother,” Melton said, composing himself between words. “You are my hero.”

Melton then thanked critics for acknowledging his work, saying “I extend my deepest respect and appreciation to each and every one of you.” The “Riverdale” alum also thanked Netflix for supporting him.

About the movie: Starring Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman, “May December” follows the story of a Hollywood actor, Elizabeth (Portman), who went to Savannah, Georgia, to research her role portraying Gracie Atherton-Yoo (Moore). Gracie was imprisoned for having sex with Joe (Melton), her son’s 13-year-old friend, whom she married after her release 23 years later.

Other awardees: Other Asian American actors present at the event include Lana Condor, Randall Park and “Beef” stars Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, to name a few. Greta Lee, Ken Jeong, “Beef” director Lee Sung-jin and “Suzume” filmmaker Makoto Shinkai also received awards.
