Rich Brian pays homage to his Justin Chon film debut in new single ‘Sundance Freestyle’
On late Wednesday, Indonesian rapper Rich Brian released “Sundance Freestyle,” a track that pays homage to his acting debut in the drama film “Jamojaya.”
The song, which is available for streaming now via 88rising and Warner Records, is a reference to the annual Sundance Film Festival in Salt Lake City, Utah, where “Jamojaya” premiered over the weekend.
The track’s music video features Brian, dressed as his character in “Jamojaya,” appearing on a talk show to chat about the film’s release. The video includes a wide array of characters disrupting the production, from skateboarding keytarists to disco dancers.
Brian brags about his film debut achievement in the song’s bars: “Five years ago, I’d be so happy to get five bands for a 30-minute set … And I’m ’bout to watch my first movie that I shot up in the islands.”
The film explores the relationship between James and his father, Joyo, who was previously James’ manager before being fired during a televised interview. The father-son conflict in the film is underscored by the unaddressed death of James’ older brother.
Much of the film is primarily in the Indonesian language. 88rising CEO and co-founder Sean Miyashiro served as an executive producer, while the film’s main cast includes Yayu Unru, Henry Ian Cusick, Anthony Kiedis (of Red Hot Chili Peppers fame) and Sonya Balmores.
