Korean fried chicken is favorite K-food outside of Korea, survey reveals
Korean-style fried chicken has been voted as the most favorite Korean food outside of the East Asian country, according to a recent South Korean government survey.
About the survey: The survey, which excluded individuals of Korean descent, involved 9,000 participants in 18 major cities worldwide, including New York, Toronto, Paris, London, Beijing, Tokyo, Bangkok, Dubai and Rio de Janeiro. The survey is conducted annually in collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and its affiliated Korean Food Promotion Institute.
The results: Researchers found that 16.5% of respondents favored Korean-style fried chicken, followed by instant ramen (11.1%) and kimchi (9.8%).
The fried chicken, which is typically served with or without a variety of sauces, has topped the survey for the fourth consecutive year. The survey also revealed increasing global familiarity with Korean cuisine, with 60% of respondents claiming knowledge about Korean food.
Most well-known dish: The most well-known Korean dish is kimchi, with 40.2% of respondents saying that the fermented vegetables is the first dish that comes to mind when they think of “Korean food.” Other dishes that come to mind include bibimbap (23.6%), Korean chicken (16.2%), bulgogi (13.3%) and Korean barbecue (12%).
