Disney finds their Lilo for upcoming ‘Lilo & Stitch’ live-action remake
Disney has reportedly found its leading lady for the upcoming live-action remake of “Lilo & Stitch.”
Newcomer Maia Kealoha has been cast as Lilo after a months-long search, Knight Edge Media reported. Kealoha has yet to star in any big onscreen projects, but she has reportedly participated in several Little Miss Kona Coffee pageants.
A casting call first shared in November 2022 stated that Disney was looking for a “precocious Native Hawaiian girl who loves hula, surfing and wildlife” with a “special affinity for all things ‘gross.’”
The remake of Disney’s hit 2002 movie will be directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, the filmmaker behind the Oscar-nominated animated film “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.”
Chris Kekaniokalani Bright penned the upcoming adaptation’s script. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich will serve as producers, while Ryan Halprin will executive produce.
Zach Galifianakis will be joining Kealoha as the beloved alien Pleakley.
Other members of the film’s cast have yet to be confirmed.
“Lilo and Stitch” centers around a young girl named Lilo Pelekai who lives with Nani, her older sister and legal guardian.
Lilo’s life takes an unexpected turn when a genetically engineered blue alien named Stitch crash-lands on Earth. Lilo, who takes Stitch under her wing as her pet, has no idea that the alien was originally intended to wreak havoc. The two go on several adventures and eventually discover the true meaning of family, all while avoiding nosy social workers and dangerous aliens chasing after them.
The live-action adaptation of “Lilo & Stitch” was originally scheduled to begin filming in 2020, but this has been pushed back due to several delays.
It is set to premiere on Disney+. An official release date has yet to be confirmed.
