Zayn Malik has surprised fans by singing in Urdu in a recent collaboration with Pakistani group Aur.
About the song: Released on Friday, “Tu Hai Kahan,” a remake of Aur’s breakout hit of the same title, features Malik singing the chorus in Urdu, the national language of Pakistan. The new single also comes with a new music video featuring Malik.
While the original track, released on June 11, 2023, has gained over 98.5 million views, the remake has amassed 5.5 million views in less than a week. The original version reportedly topped Spotify India, Pakistan and Global Viral charts upon its release.
What the artists are saying: Malik, who is British Pakistani, said he was “incredibly humbled” when the Karachi-based trio — which consists of Ahad, Usama and Raffey — approached him for the collaboration. “I love the song and have brought some of myself to it, I hope people love what we’ve done,” he said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Aur, who made waves after their debut in 2020, lauded their collaboration, noting that it “shows that music has no boundaries” and that it was difficult for them to explain how amazed they were after hearing Malik’s vocals on the track.
“We’re taking Pakistani music global, and we can’t wait for the world to vibe to our music,” they said.
What fans are saying: Many fans gushed at Malik’s vocal contribution in the remake. One described it as otherworldly, writing that “the notes at the beginning of Zayn’s song are magnificent, they take you to another world.”
Malik’s collaboration also made Pakistani fans proud. One wrote, “As a first generation Pakistani American, thank you. Proud to be Pakistani, proud to have Indian roots. I love you all.”
“It’s time to embrace all our heritage on times that exist around the world,” another commented. “Ma’shallah guys, great collaboration and work.”
