Yuzuru Hanyu, one of the greatest ice skaters of all time, has launched a YouTube channel after retiring from international competitions.
In his first YouTube video on Sunday, Hanyu, 27, explains to viewers that he started the channel because he wants “people to watch [his] skating and performances” and promises that he “will continue to skate at [his] best.”
The video garnered over a million views a day after being posted, and the comments section has been flooded by fans around the world sharing fond memories of watching the legendary ice skater and expressing support for his future endeavors.
From dominating junior international competitions to winning his first Olympic gold at age 19 in Sochi, Russia, Hanyu is one of the most decorated ice skaters ever. Nicknamed by his legion of fans as “Ice Prince,” Hanyu is the first and only men’s single skater to achieve a “Super Slam” by winning all major competitions in both his junior and senior careers.
Although he retired in February from formal competitions, Hanyu plans on continuing his career as a professional ice skater, revealing to the press that he is working towards performing a quadruple axel — a move that has never been successfully achieved in the history of the sport.
Hanyu’s YouTube channel will allow fans to follow his latest exploits as he enters a new stage in his career.
