AMC has renewed “The Walking Dead” for a ninth season with Angela Kang as the new showrunner.
Kang has been writing for the show since 2011. She has written around 20 episodes, including “Judge, Jury, Executioner,” “Coda,” “Still” and “The Cell.”
“This is an enormously important day for the entire ‘The Walking Dead’ television universe. We are proud to acknowledge Angela’s significant contribution to the series and to set a clear path forward for a ninth season under her direction,” AMC president Charlie Collier said via The Hollywood Reporter.
Kang, who started co-executive producing in 2013, was also promoted as executive producer for Season 9.
Kang expressed excitement over her promotion:
“I am beyond thrilled to be stepping into this new role with ‘The Walking Dead.’ Working on this series and having the opportunity to adapt Robert Kirkman’s amazing comic has been a fangirl dream come true for me.
“I’m excited to continue working with Scott and the wonderfully supportive folks at AMC, and can’t wait to share the next chapter of the story with our fans next fall.”
Meanwhile, series showrunner Scott Gimple will serve as chief content officer to oversee the entire “Walking Dead” TV universe, including “The Walking Dead,” spin-off “Fear the Walking Dead” and possible brand extensions.
The franchise, estimated at more than $1 billion, currently includes a virtual reality app and mobile game. An augmented reality game is expected this year.
“Further, with gratitude and admiration, we also recognize Scott’s broad impact on, and leadership of, the content that fuels our TWD universe. Together, we will dream bigger and more broadly than ever before,” Collier said.
Gimple entered the show as writer and producer in Season 2. He became executive producer and showrunner in Season 4, succeeding Frank Darabont and Glen Mazzara.
Collier thanked fans, saying, “I know I speak for Angela, Scott and everyone at AMC when I say thanks most of all to the fans and the many talented people who have helped AMC play Dead.”
While “The Walking Dead” remains the No. 1 show for adults ages 18 to 49 on TV, the changes come after it saw significant declines in Seasons 7 and 8’s ratings, Variety noted.
“The Walking Dead” Season 9 premiers in late 2018 on AMC.
