World’s largest Costco eyed in California
By Carl Samson
If all goes according to plan, California will soon house the world’s biggest Costco.
Where it’d be: The proposed store, set to cover 241,342 square feet, would be constructed on North Riverside Drive and West Herndon Avenue in Northwest Fresno, according to a recent draft environmental impact report. The lot sits next to the Riverside Golf Course and is currently filled with weeds.
What’d be in it: The Fresno project would be larger than its recently opened Salt Lake City counterpart — which is currently the world’s biggest Costco — by 6,000 square feet. It would include a 32-pump gas station, a drive-through car wash and an e-commerce fulfillment center.
Community concerns: Local community members welcomed the idea of the bigger Costco, which would replace the current one on Shaw and Blythe Avenues that has been around since 1985.
However, some residents expressed concerns about traffic congestion. As per the report, the new store is expected to generate over 10,600 vehicle trips on weekdays and more than 14,200 trips on weekends. Others also raised safety concerns, particularly regarding children walking to and from nearby schools.
What needs to be done: The project is bound for the Fresno City Council, which will ultimately decide its fate. Until Aug. 25, the public can comment on the proposed project by emailing the city’s supervising planner, Jose Valenzuela, at jose.valenzuela@fresno.gov or sending mail to 2600 Fresno St., Room 3043, Fresno, CA 93721.
