Chinese Woman Who Had 17 Abortions in 6 Years May Never Be Able to Have Children Again

A 27-year-old woman in central China may no longer be able to bear children after having 17 abortions over a period of six years.
According to doctors, the repeated procedure left her uterus severely damaged, its lining now “as thin as a piece of paper.”
Due to her frequent visits, the woman has been dubbed a “regular customer” at Shiyan Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital in Hubei province.
She has been in a relationship with her boyfriend for six years, and within that period, the couple used no contraceptive method when having sex, Shiyan Evening News reported.
Earlier this month, the woman visited the hospital for another abortion.
Dr. Zhao Qin, head of gynecology, urged her to keep her child as it may be her last shot at motherhood.
Despite warnings, the woman insisted on going through the procedure.
“I found her uterine lining to be critically thin, like a piece of paper, due to the repeated abortions she had in the past,” Dr. Zhao said. “Her uterus was also badly scarred.”
The woman defended her decision to terminate all pregnancies as she was not prepared for marriage and parenthood.
In China, babies born out of wedlock will not be issued a national ID, which then bars them from receiving state rights, including access to education.
It’s unclear why the couple never used any contraception, but such a case is being attributed to the lack of sex education in Chinese schools. Peng Xiaohui, a leading sexologist in the country, claimed that 99% of citizens are ill-informed on the topic, according to the South China Morning Post.
