Report: Vancouver is the world’s most ‘sushi-crazed’ city outside Japan
By Ryan General
A global ranking of cities with the highest concentration of sushi-lovers has placed Vancouver at the No. 1 spot.
International food magazine Chef’s Pencil gave the Canadian city a perfect “sushi popularity” score of 100, as well as describing it as the “non-Japanese sushi capital of the world.”
The magazine used Google Trends to find out which cities have the “highest concentration of sushi-related searches.”
“Google Trends provides popularity scores for countries and cities, showcasing the places with the highest concentration of sushi-related searches the world over,” the Chef’s Pencil explained. “For example, if Vancouver has a sushi popularity score of 100 and New York has a score of 82, it means that a higher percentage of Vancouverites are searching for sushi than New Yorkers.”
Chef’s Pencil has claimed that the global popularity of sushi is at “an all-time high,” based on the Google Trends data. After Vancouver, whose metropolitan area has over 600 sushi restaurants, Chef’s Pencil ranked Novosibirsk, Russia, at second place with a score of 99. Three Ukrainian cities – Odessa, Kharkiv, and Kyiv – are in third, fourth and fifth place, respectively.
