A ride-sharing driver and his daughter are speaking out about safety concerns after two recent incidents involving passengers in San Francisco.
Dong Hwang began driving for Uber and Lyft last March and has since been making a living picking up 30 passengers per day.
However, two horrific encounters have become a great concern for the 64-year-old driver and his family. The most recent incident happened just last Wednesday.
Hwang and his daughter released dashcam videos via shared KTVU that shows an Uber passenger stripping and suddenly touching himself.
“Inside my head, very, very confused,” Hwang was quoted as saying.
According to Hwang, he picked up the male passenger around 2:45 a.m. along 19th Avenue near San Francisco’s Stonestown shopping center.
Hwang, a Korean immigrant, speaks little English so his daughter Ion helped describe what the passenger did in her dad’s vehicle.
“He started changing in the back seat,” Ion narrated. “Then he ended up undressing himself.  He climbed to the front passenger seat. He basically started touching himself.”
Hwang had no choice but to continue driving the man to his destination out of concern that if he canceled the ride, he would face consequences with either Uber or the passenger.
“I smile because if I angry, he more angry,” Hwang noted.
The other incident happened about a month ago while Hwang was driving a female Lyft passenger who was throwing up in his vehicle.
He decided to pull over at Market and Noe Streets and take photos as evidence in case he needs it for Lyft. Dashboard images show the woman punching him several times in the head.
“Oftentimes, people are focused on the passenger safety but people have to realize the drivers are also the same people the passengers are,” Ion said.
Uber and Lyft both took immediate action by banning the passengers involved in the incidents.
Despite his terrible experience with passengers, Hwang says he plans to continue working with both ride-sharing companies as he loves driving.
