U.K. Handymen Raped Vietnamese Mother For Hours, Took a Selfie Before Burning Her Alive

Unwin, 39, of St Oswald’s Terrace, Houghton, and McFall, 50, of Waterloo Road, Blackpool in North East England, went on to rape 29-year-old nail technician Quyen Ngoc Nguyen, before burning her alive in August 2017.

Newcastle Crown Court heard that McFall sent a message to Unwin on the night of the crime, asking: “Are we raping the ch***?”

Nguyen, who is known by her English name Anna, was held at Unwin’s home in Houghton-le-Spring, Tyne and Wear, where she was raped repeatedly for five hours and forced to hand over bank PIN numbers to the criminals. Unwin and McFall were caught on CCTV from the next door house as they brought Nguyen out of the house.

The victim, covered in a white sheet, was loaded into her black Audi A4 and taken to a dirt track in the village of Shiney Row, Sunderland. The men then doused the car with petrol before setting it ablaze with her inside. Prosecutor Jamie Hill told the court that Nguyen was still alive when the car was set on fire.

“They took a selfie of themselves in the car. McFall is holding the phone and smiling into the phone as they are driving along,” Hill was quoted as saying.

Nguyen’s lifeless body was found in the early hours of Aug. 16 after local emergency services responded to a call that a car was on fire in Success Road.

The victim is a mother of two who moved from Vietnam to the U.K. in 2010 and settled in a home in Killingworth, North Tyneside, where she stayed with her sister. Together they opened a nail salon in Birtley, Tyne and Wear, according to MailOnline. One of Nguyen’s children is in the UK while the other is in Vietnam.

“As well as helping run the nail salon Miss Nguyen had a part of her life which was largely kept secret,” Hill said. “The police investigation revealed she had been involved in helping to rent flats to people who did not have the necessary immigration documents to live and work in the UK.”

He revealed that police discovered some of the properties she rented were used for growing cannabis. Nguyen met defendant Unwin in April of last year through renting these properties.

Upon questioning, Unwin claimed that he and McFall were employed in repairing properties after the cannabis farms had been harvested. However, prosecutors say the pair actually stole and sold the crops themselves.

Unwin and McFall both denied the rape and murder charges in the ongoing trial, which is expected to last four weeks.
