Troye Sivan’s music video for “Got Me Started,” the second single from his upcoming album, noticeably pays homage to the works of Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai.
About the video: Directed by Gordon von Steiner, the video was shot entirely in Bangkok, Thailand, and released on Sept. 28. It features a voiceover intro from the Australian pop sensation himself, reflecting on his emotional journey in recent years. The track is part of Sivan’s upcoming album, “Something to Give Each Other,” which is set to release on October 13.

Visual references: The music video boasts a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience that undeniably draws inspiration from Wong Kar-wai‘s iconic films. Among them is “Happy Together,” known for depicting the tumultuous relationship between two men. One poignant scene mirrors the spirit of the famous dance sequence in the 1997 classic, in which two Asian men are seen swaying closely together.
Nods to other works: TikToker @Juangarcia.mx previously traced references to Wong’s films in the original version of the music video, connecting stills from “Got Me Started” to scenes from “Chungking Express,” “Happy Together” and “2046.” Other observers also noted visual cues reminiscent of scenes from “In the Mood for Love.”
About Wong: Noted for his atmospheric films about memory, the auteur is celebrated for such masterpieces as “Days of Being Wild,” “Chungking Express,” “Fallen Angels” and “Happy Together.” Each of his films bears his iconic style and moving storytelling, which have left an indelible mark on the world of cinema.
