Tiger Tiger Fest 2023, a festival celebrating the Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities in Portland, Oregon, is set to kick off next weekend.
Key details: The event is reportedly the first annual celebration of AANHPI culture and communities in Portland.
Although there is no ticket required for the festival, the team behind the event is asking attendees to RSVP to allow them to “plan appropriately for the festival.” The event organizers are expecting over 3,000 attendees this year, compared to the 1,200 who came last year.
What to expect: The celebration will feature several entertainment options, including poetry reading, dance numbers and live music.
Different kinds of food from several vendors are also to be expected at the event, including Baon Kainan (Filipino American), Bhuna (Indian soul food), Heyday (rice flour donuts), Kim Jong Grillin (Korean American), Matta (Viet Kieu) and Yoonique Tea (boba).
Helping those in need: The event organizers are also offering assistance to those who need help with transportation and food, according to one notice. The event’s frequently asked questions page noted that more information regarding the matter is coming soon.
About the event: Tiger Tiger is “as much a party as an exploration of our multi-hyphenate selves,” Joe Kye, who decided to start the celebration in 2022 amid the anti-AANHPI violence brought upon by the COVID-19 pandemic, said in a press release.
“Our communities have been in overdrive, mobilizing and laboring to protect ourselves,” he said. “Last year we saw how much we needed a space for radical joy – I knew we had to bring Tiger Tiger back.”
Fundraising: Besides the celebration, the organizers have also started a fundraising effort to help those in need of food and transportation within the community as well as cover the performers, artists and vendor’s permit fees. The crowdfunding campaign has so far raised over $10,000 of its $15,000 goal.
