An Asian couple gave birth to New York City’s first baby of 2023.
Brooklyn couple Dexin and Holly Zhang welcomed their first son Kingsley Mei at exactly midnight on Jan. 1.
“When I heard the fireworks starting I was like, ‘Oh, it’s the new year.’ All of sudden we looked at the clock, wow, exactly 12 o’clock. The doctor and the nurse were like ‘Oh congratulations, you have a baby,’” Zhang told WABC from her bed at NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health.
The city’s hospital system delivers around 15,000 babies each year. Kingsley Mei, the first of 2023, weighed a healthy 6 pounds, 7.6 ounces and measured 19 inches.
Zhang said she planned to give birth elsewhere but her water broke as they were on the train to the hospital. The NYPD rushed to her aid and sent her to the closest facility.
“This is the best gift for me for this year,” Zhang told CBS 2. “I have the ‘New Year Baby,’ the first one in New York City.”
