Filipino Churro Shop Owner Destroys Racist Trolls Who Don’t Know the Churro is Part Asian

One of the founders of the famous churros food craze, The Loop, just slammed a racist internet troll with a positive Instagram post.
Jed, a Filipino-American entrepreneur, made the clap back on his foodie Instagram account Daily Food Feed where he called out a troll that left a comment saying: “Kinda disappointing when it’s Asians running a Churros joint probably can’t even pronounce the rolling ‘R’ in it right.”
The owner of the churros chain wrote a four-page response in which he briefly shared his story for his love of the bread snack.
“As you may or may not know, I’m one of the founders of @theloopchurros back home in Southern California. While we’ve been blessed with success and now have 3 locations with a 4th one on the way, we often get negative comments from internet trolls who are outright offended to find out the owners are Asian and often leads to hateful and racist comments. I’m Filipino and my partners are Vietnamese. Other times, these trolls don’t know we’re Asians and assume our desserts are made by ‘white people’ and cry on about cultural appropriation. I’m completely understanding of having pride in one’s culture and having the sense of ownership with certain cultural aspects that no one else can or should take away, but will never think this with food.”
He went on to say that his love for food and the potentially innovative ways it can be prepared led him to become a food blogger.
“Early Pioneers of fusion food concepts have helped spearhead this foodie craze and made it possible for me to do what I do.”
Jed also expressed his love for Mexican food as he listed down several example of fusion food concepts that combine other cuisines such as Korean or Vietnamese food and mix it with Mexican dishes.
“Most people in Southern California grew up with the love of Mexican food, including myself, regardless of ethnicity. My love for the cuisine are the roots of my love and nostalgia for churros,” he said. This was the fuel that inspired he and his partners to start The Loop. Jed also shared his memories of eating the tasty snack growing up in the Philippines.
While many seem to believe that churros actually came from Spain, other reports suggest that the real past of the snack is a bit more complicated than that. According to Huffington Post, one version of the story involves the tasty bread snack being invented by nomadic Spanish shepherds living in the mountains who had no access to bakeries.
In another version, Portuguese sailors discovered something similar to churros back in Northern China; the locals there called it “You Tiao,” which also means as Chinese doughnuts. The sailors then brought back what they had, and after hearing of the food, the Spanish tried to copy it with their very own spin.
“While these internet trolls are very few compared to the outpouring of positive comments and support we get from The Loop’s social media, it’s been hard to sit back, stay [quiet] and not respond when I have something to say since we opened in 2016.”
“So, technically, without these Asians who ‘can’t even pronounce the rolling ‘R’ in churro, there wouldn’t even be a churro. How’s that for some original food fusion history?”
“Everyone just remember to be kind to one another. Online and off. We can always use a little more love and unity,” Jed concluded. The post has since reached over 15,000 likes.
