‘Akira’ Live-Action Postponed Indefinitely So Taika Waititi Can Make ‘Thor 4’

Months after its production was announced, the live-action “Akira” adaptation has reportedly been put on hold indefinitely.
Citing sources privy to the production, Variety reports that Warner Bros. has decided to pull the plug on the production, which was previously set to begin filming this month.
Filmmaker Taika Waititi has been announced to direct and was supposed to be in the process of meeting with young Japanese actors for “Akira’s” two lead roles.
This week, it was announced that the “Thor: Ragnarok” director has been tapped to write and direct another film in the Thor franchise.
A source close to Warner Bros. has noted that Waititi’s decision to focus on the Marvel property caught the studio “off guard” as “Akira” was already nearing production.
The studio originally allowed to delay the project so the director can have more time in finding the right cast.
Waititi was attached to the film in 2018 with a scheduled release date of May 21, 2021. Prior to Waititi’s attachment to the “Akira” adaptation, it has spent years in development hell since 2012 when Jaume Collet-Serra was set to direct it.
Warner Bros. is now hoping that “Akira” can eventually get back into production once Waititi is done filming “Thor 4.”
