Anime adaptation of ‘Suicide Squad’ unveiled at Anime Expo 2023
Warner Bros. Japan and Wit Studio have released the first trailer for “Suicide Squad Isekai,” an upcoming anime series revealed during Anime Expo 2023.
What it’s about: The trailer prominently features anime-inspired versions of beloved DC characters, such as Harley Quinn and the Joker. It also offers clues about the show’s isekai concept, which involves characters being transported to an alternate world.
Within DC Comics, the Suicide Squad is a government black ops task force composed of various villains who go on extremely dangerous missions in exchange for time taken off their sentences. Government agent Amanda Waller, also seen in the trailer, is typically in charge of the ragtag group.
Production team: Eri Osada, the chief animation director of “Jujutsu Kaisen,” will serve as the series’ director. Screenwriters Tappei Nagatsuki and Eiji Umehara, known for their work in the isekai genre through the series “Re: Zero – Starting Life in Another World,” will handle the screenplay. Akira Amano and Naoto Hosoda are credited as character designers, while Kenichiro Suehiro is composing the musical score.
The upcoming show is being produced by Wit Studio, which previously produced the first three seasons of “Attack on Titan” and other projects like “Spy x Family.”
Where in the DC universe?: It is unclear at this time whether the animated series will align with James Gunn’s “Elseworlds” strategy for DC movies and shows that deviate from the mainline DC Universe.
Gunn, who is helming DC’s film and television slate, wrote and directed 2021’s “The Suicide Squad” film. He also created a spin-off series titled “Peacemaker,” with John Cena reprising his role from the film.
Whether “Suicide Squad Isekai” will be related to Gunn’s previous credits is unknown.
Other details: A release date for the show has yet to be announced.
