New ‘Street Fighter 6’ gameplay trailer showcases return of Chun Li, now voiced by an Asian actor

Capcom revealed a new gameplay trailer for upcoming game “Street Fighter 6” at the Playstation State of Play event on Thursday, and it shows off Chun Li, now voiced by a new actor, Jennie Kwan.

The “Street Fighter” franchise first debuted in Japanese arcades in 1987 and is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year.

“Street Fighter 6” was first officially announced on Feb. 21 with a teaser trailer and a new logo that was heavily criticized for being unappealing in comparison to its older logos. Yesterday’s new gameplay trailer revealed a redesigned logo that appears slicker and more appealing.

The new trailer suggests that “Street Fighter 6” will carry a heavier emphasis on story elements in comparison to the previous “Street Fighter” installments. There will also be returning characters including Chun-Li, Ryu and Luke, as well as new characters such as Jamie and Kimberly.

A major change made to the upcoming game is the cast change for the character Chun-Li. Chun-Li was previously voiced by actor Laura Bailey since “Street Fighter 4” in 2008. Fans, however, have long asked for the character to be voiced by an Asian actor. For “Street Fighter 6,” Bailey will be replaced by Filipino American voice actor Jennie Kwan. Kwan is known for her voice work in multiple games and animated shows, including as Suki in “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” along with roles in “Red Dead Redemption 2” and “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.”

The change was confirmed by Capcom on the official “Street Fighter” website, and Kwan shared an Instagram post earlier today expressing her excitement.

“Street Fighter 6” will feature two game modes, with one centered on one-on-one fighting and the other focused on an immersive single-player story mode. It will also include a new in-game commentary feature recorded by well-known figures in the fighting game community “to commentate your matches.” Street Fighter’s official Twitter page revealed the first FCG commentators as Aru and Jeremy “Vicious” Lopez, who will provide English and Japanese commentary.

The game is expected to release sometime in 2023 and will be available on Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC through Steam.
