A video game based on its hit South Korean series “Squid Game” is underway at Netflix, the streaming giant announced on Wednesday.
What’s it about: Netflix has yet to provide details, but as per its description, the “Squid Game” video game will let you “compete with other players in games from the hit series.” Popular games from the survival thriller include “Red Light, Green Light,” “Dalgona” and “Glass Bridge.”
Other games: Netflix unveiled the game as part of its 2024 slate of video games, which include “Sonic Mania Plus,” based on “Sonic the Hedgehog,” and a “Rebel Moon” game based on Zack Snyder’s upcoming Netflix movies of the same main title. A game based on “Money Heist” called “Money Heist: Ultimate Choice” will also arrive.
“By year’s end, we’ll have 86 games available — all included with every Netflix membership without ads, in-app purchases or extra fees,” Mike Verdu, Netflix’s vice president of games, said in a statement. “And with nearly 90 more games in development, we’re just getting started.”
The big picture: Directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, “Squid Game” is one of Netflix’s most successful projects, raising the company’s worth to nearly $1 billion. Its reality show spinoff, “Squid Game: The Challenge,” recently named its Season 1 winner and is now accepting applications for Season 2.
