Jung Ho-yeon joins Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander in new film from ‘The Wailing’ director
South Korean actor and model Jung Ho-yeon, best known for her Emmy-nominated role in the hit Netflix show “Squid Game,” has been cast in the upcoming Korean mystery thriller film “Hope.”
This will mark the 28-year-old SAG Award winner’s first starring role in a Korean project since her “Squid Game” screen debut in September 2021, Deadline reported.
She will be joined by husband-and-wife duo Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, who will speak English in the primarily Korean-language film. Fassbender and Vikander first worked together onscreen for “The Light Between Oceans,” a romantic drama film released in 2016.
South Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin will direct “Hope.”
He will notably reunite with “Parasite” cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo, who he previously collaborated with on the 2016 South Korean horror film “The Wailing.”
“Hope” will revolve around the inhabitants of Hopo Port, a secluded harbor town.
The residents make a mysterious discovery and soon realize that they must fight for their lives against an unprecedented threat. Jung will play a police officer in the film.
Na expressed his excitement for working with the “Squid Game” star.
“Everything about Hoyeon aligned with what I envisioned for Sung-Ae,” he told Deadline. “Her bold, bright energy will be a great source of strength for this film.”
On what he hopes audience members will take away from his film, he said, “Oftentimes, a person’s goodwill can lead to unintended catastrophe simply because of differences in perspective. My hope for this film is to cinematically capture that phenomenon in a way that has yet to be seen.”
Filming is scheduled to start later this year in South Korea with additional casting and pre-production currently underway.
In addition to “Hope,” Jung will be appearing in Alfonso Cuarón’s Apple TV+ thriller series “Disclaimer” and Joe Talbot’s film “The Governesses” with Lily-Rose Depp for A24 and BBC Films.
