‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ dominates domestic box office on opening weekend

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” slung its way to the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office this weekend, garnering over $120.5 million.
What happened: The sequel to the hit 2018 film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” was released on Friday and had the second-biggest opening of 2023 so far after “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” according to Sony Pictures Entertainment on Sunday.
The film also earned more than $88.5 million overseas over the weekend, garnering a total of over $208.5 million at the worldwide box office. It reportedly grossed the most overseas in China ($17.3 million), Mexico ($11.6 million) and the United Kingdom ($11.5 million).
In comparison, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” garnered around $35 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. It went on to garner a worldwide box office total of over $384 million.
About “Across the Spider-Verse”: The film, directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, follows Mile Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) as he is “catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters the Spider Society, a team of Spider-People charged with protecting the Multiverse’s very existence,” the film’s official synopsis states.
Key people: In addition to Moore, the animated movie’s cast members include Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, Jake Johnson, Jason Schwartzman, Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya, Oscar Isaac and Karan Soni as Spider-Man India.
Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and David Callaham wrote the film’s script; Lord, Miller, Avi Arad, Amy Pascal and Christina Steinberg served as its producers; and Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, Aditya Sood and Brian Michael Bendi served as its executive producers.
