“The Simpsons” officially welcomed Marvel star Simu Liu to the show’s universe after he made a special guest appearance on Sunday.
The 33-year-old “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” star was the voice behind the character Hubert Wong, a successful tech billionaire, in the ninth episode of “The Simpsons” Season 34. The episode’s title, “When Nelson Met Lisa,” appears to be a reference to the 1989 romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally.”
Warning: Spoilers ahead
Sunday’s episode, which features several time jumps, is set in the future and shows Lisa bumping into former bully Nelson Muntz. Lisa, already in her 20s, bonds with Nelson during their serendipitous meeting, during which he shows her that he lives in a bell tower and also teaches her how to emulate his iconic mocking laugh.
Despite their chemistry, Lisa ends up moving to a new city, leaving Nelson behind. The fated couple eventually meet again five years later while Lisa is on a train with her husband, Hubert, to celebrate the tech billionaire being chosen as Time’s “Person of the Year.” Hubert and Nelson get into a heated exchange that ends with Nelson giving Hubert a wedgie. The incident makes Lisa upset, and she leaves with Hubert.
In another time jump, Lisa meets Nelson again at a shop that sells “ePhones,” a smartphone created by Hubert, and tells him that she left the tech billionaire. As they are about to reignite their past romance with a kiss, Lisa’s former partner suddenly appears and manages to win her over.
Lisa and Nelson eventually realize they are destined to be together during their final serendipitous meeting while serving as the maid of honor and best man at a wedding four months later.
After the episode aired, “The Simpsons” officially welcomed Liu to the show’s universe in a tweet, calling him “Person of the Year.”
“Messed around and married Lisa Simpson?!?! How lucky can a guy possibly get?” Liu wrote. “Oh yeah and the TIME thing is not too shabby either. Sorry Milhouse, sucks to suck.”
On Nov. 15, Liu proudly teased his “The Simpsons” guest appearance as Lisa’s “perfect future boyfriend” via an Instagram Story, writing, “Guys it’s me IM ON THE SIMPSONS.”
