‘Asian son duties fulfilled’: Simu Liu buys his parents a brand new ‘Tessie’

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” star Simu Liu purchased a brand-new Tesla for his parents as a “tiny token of gratitude.”
Liu, 33, shared the heartwarming moment on Instagram on Saturday and thanked his mother for “setting him straight every once in a while.”
“My parents continue to surprise me everyday with their capacity for growth and empathy,” the actor wrote. “This is but a tiny token of gratitude. Your boy might be 33 and a Marvel superhero, but he needs his mama to set him straight every once in a while. Thanks ma. I know what I have to do.”
The “Kim’s Convenience” star also shared the picture in an Instagram Story post where he jokingly wrote, “Asian son duties fulfilled.”
In his memoir “We Were Dreamers,” which was released back in May, Liu shared that he had a difficult relationship with his parents growing up, mentioning that they sometimes hit him when he would talk back and also provided little emotional warmth even though he did well in school.
“If I got a bad mark, I was berated for being either stupid or some variation of a failure. If I talked back, they would smack me around a little,” Liu wrote. “Our relationship was almost irreconcilable. Every single day was torture for me.”
Looking back, however, Liu said he now understands that his mother and father were struggling as immigrant parents at the time.
“Ask any child of any immigrant family if they’ve had a heated argument with their parents that sometimes got physical.” Liu told The Independent. “That’s the immigrant mentality. That’s the panic that runs through all of our parents’ veins.”
“So when you have a child that is threatening to undo all that you’ve worked hard for, you’d be pretty mad,” he continued. “I’m not trying to make excuses for their actions, but I am trying to contextualize them. My parents aren’t villains.”
Liu recently proved that he is a certified triple threat after posting videos of himself performing an acoustic cover of the country classic “Tennessee Whiskey” and dancing to Armani White’s “Billie Eilish” with dance group Kinjaz.
Liu is set to appear as one of the three versions of Ken in the 2023 movie “Barbie.” He will also play a villain in the upcoming Netflix film “Atlas.”
