Simu Liu is trading up the 10 rings for far more villainous things.
The actor, who made his superhero debut in the MCU’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” is now set to play the antagonist opposite Jennifer Lopez in a new Netflix film titled “Atlas,” Deadline reported.
Set in the future, the film follows a woman named Atlas as she fights to save the world from a rogue artificial intelligence soldier who’s made it their mission to wipe out all of humanity. With the fate of the world in her hands, Atlas dons a military mech suit armed with its own AI, joining forces with that which she fears most. Not much else has been revealed about the plot or the characters as the project is still in its early stages.
Sterling K. Brown and Abraham Popoola are also starring in “Atlas,” though their roles have not yet been revealed. The film will be directed by Brad Peyton (”Rampage,” “San Andreas”) with Aron Eli Coleite writing the most recent draft of the script, based on the screenplay by Leo Sardarian. Liu is scheduled to appear in a number of diverse projects currently underway, including a live-action “Barbie” movie as a Ken variant, the adventure film “Arthur the King” with Mark Wahlberg and romantic comedy “One True Loves.” He is also set to reprise his role as Shang-Chi in the film’s sequel, which is still in pre-production.
