Simu Liu has shared his excitement for the news that director Destin Daniel Cretton is lined up to helm the next “Avengers” movie.
On Tuesday, it was announced that the director would be spearheading “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” which is set for release on May 2, 2025. “The Kang Dynasty” is the first of two back-to-back “Avengers” films coming out that year, followed by “Secret Wars.” The two were among the long lineup of upcoming Marvel films and TV shows announced at Comic-Con over the weekend.
Cretton previously directed Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” which stars Liu as its titular hero. Featuring the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first lead Asian superhero, the film grossed $432 million worldwide after its premiere in 2021.
Liu took to Twitter to share his reaction to the latest news, reflecting back on their shared experience prior to the success of “Shang-Chi.”
“Three years ago at SDCC 2019 Destin and I sat backstage at Hall H watching some of the most famous people on Earth take the stage,” Liu wrote. “We looked at each other like ‘damn, is this really happening to us right now?’ IT’S F**KING HAPPENING BROTHER!”
Cretton is already signed on to direct the sequel to “Shang-Chi” along with the new “Wonder Man” series for Disney Plus, though their release dates have not been confirmed as of yet. “The Kang Dynasty” and “Secret Wars” will close out Marvel’s Phase 6 and conclude the franchise’s Multiverse Saga.
