Simu Liu announces memoir sharing his immigrant family’s ‘extraordinary origin story’

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” star Simu Liu announced on Tuesday via Twitter that his memoir will be available this May.
In the tweet posted Feb. 1, Liu shared news of his forthcoming memoir with HarperCollins Publishers by posting a photo of the book’s cover and publication date.
The memoir’s title “We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story,” alludes to Liu’s journey from an immigrant childhood in Canada to his eventual worldwide success and fame as Marvel superhero Shang-Chi.
Others responded to the thread, calling the announcement “the best Lunar New Year gift ever” and congratulating the actor.
HarperCollins Publishers describes “We Were Dreamers” as “more than a celebrity memoir.” “It’s a story about growing up between cultures, finding your family, and becoming the master of your own extraordinary circumstance.”
Liu has previously spoken about the complexities of his family’s immigration story, publishing a letter to his parents in Maclean’s Canada in 2017. Liu’s parents moved to Canada when he was an infant, and he was raised by his grandparents in Harbin, China, until age 4 before emigrating himself.
“We Were Dreamers” will be published May 3, 2022.
