Ronny Chieng’s Brooklyn Nets comedy pilot axed by Hulu
Hulu has decided not to move forward with Ronny Chieng’s comedy pilot about the Brooklyn Nets.
The TV series, which would have seen the 37-year-old Malaysian actor play the general manager of the Brooklyn Nets, was directed by Greg Mottola and inspired by the professional basketball team’s real-life owner, Joe Tsai.
Chieng penned the pilot with Jon Pollack, who has previously worked on shows such as “Modern Family” and “30 Rock.”
Pollack, Chieng and fellow executive producers Melvin Mar, Jake Kasdan and Hannah Pham are reportedly looking elsewhere to find a new home for the pilot.
Mar and Kasdan have notably executive-produced shows such as ABC’s “Fresh Off the Boat” and the upcoming Disney+ series “American Born Chinese.”
Chieng, who has appeared in several TV series and films such as “The Daily Show,” “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” “M3GAN,” “Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.” and “Crazy Rich Asians,” is set to appear in Hulu‘s “Interior Chinatown,” which is based on the book of the same name by Charles Yu. The upcoming series centers around Willis Wu (portrayed by Jimmy O. Yang), a background character stuck in a police procedural show. Its ensemble cast includes the likes of Lauren Tom, Chloe Bennet, Tzi Ma, Archie Kao and Diana Lin, among others.
