Meet the First British Bangladeshi Male Model at London Fashion Week
By Carl Samson
Ramzan Miah made history as the first male British Bangladeshi model to appear at the London Fashion Week (LFW) in September.
The 25-year-old from Luton, Bedfordshire has been modeling since he was 17, but only joined a fashion agency three months ago, when his agent encouraged him to audition for LFW.
Miah’s efforts paid off as he snagged a photo shoot and catwalk at the prestigious fashion show.
Miah said that he hopes his debut would inspire others to embrace their identity.
“I participated in this shoot to show that everyone is individual, no matter what background you are,” he told the Norwich Evening News last month.
Miah’s modeling journey kicked off at a fashion show competition at The Mall in Luton, where a talent agent approached him.
His first catwalk then happened at age 22, when he modeled John Lewis at Norwich Fashion Week.
“My first catwalk was Norwich Fashion Week, I have come a long way from this and want to share this [LFW appearance] to the Norwich community.”
A lot has happened since then, as Miah now finds himself not only a professional model but an actor appearing on “Legacy,” “Naca,” “Ghost Stories,” “The Rocketman” and Disney’s live-action remake of “Aladdin.”
Born on July 19, 1993 in Luton, Miah has loved the stage as a child, attending Stagecoach Theatre Arts at the age of 10.
He then trained at the Bird College in Musical Theatre and Dance and graduated in 2016.
Miah described his stint at the London Fashion week as “very surreal” — largely due to the fact that Bangladeshi models are a rarity.
“It was a very surreal moment. In the media, currently, I feel there aren’t enough Bangladeshi models and I want to be the person to inspire and change this,” he told Luton Today.
That being said, he believes LFW is a great avenue to showcase diversity.
“A platform such as London Fashion Week is a great way to showcase diversity and culture. Everyone is unique in their own way, regardless of race, shape, colour, or weight.”
