Malaysia’s AirAsia Appoints Indonesian Actress as New Director

A popular Indonesian actress has been tapped by Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia to be among its independent commissioners for AirAsia Indonesia.
AirAsia Group’s CEO and co-founder Tan Sri Tony Fernandes announced the appointment of renowned celebrity Raline Shah on Monday via his Instagram account.
Fernandes uploaded a photo of him with Shah, captioned: “Our new director in AirAsia Indonesia @ralineshah. Smart creative humble. A real coup readying our company for IPO.”
While Shah will be joining the company as a member of PT Indonesia AirAsia’s board of commissioners, Fernandes’ post mistakenly labeled her as a “director.”
A graduate of the National University of Singapore, Shah holds a bachelor of arts degree in political science. The 33-year-old actress, who has starred in several local movies, first entered the limelight after joining the 2008 Putri Indonesia Pageant. While she failed to win the crown, many consider her as one of the favorites in the competition.
Her appointment was made during a general shareholder meeting on Monday, according to Jakarta Globe. The company stated that the decision coincides with the company’s preparations for an initial public offering later this year. Shah has reportedly expressed her eagerness to join AirAsia.
Indonesia AirAsia chief commissioner Pin Harris said Shah’s addition to the firm reflects its dynamism and its belief in empowering the youth.
“This can bring AirAsia Indonesia to the next level,” Harris was quoted as saying.
AirAsia Indonesia president director, Dendy Kurniawan, similarly expressed his excitement in welcoming Shah on board.
The Malaysian aviation company, which has its main hub in Kuala Lumpur, also has regional branches in Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand.
