Pixar announced on Tuesday that Shi is now the vice president of Creative. Collins, who has worked for the company for 25 years, has assumed the position of senior vice president of Development.
“Pixar has always been a place that seeks to delight and surprise audiences and I am thrilled to be able to expand on that legacy and help shape what comes next, surrounded by some of the most diverse, unique and inspiring filmmakers and voices working today,” Collins said in a statement.
Collins, who was vice president of Development before her promotion, helped lead Pixar’s SparksShorts program. She previously worked on several notable films such as “Wall-E,” “Finding Dory” and “A Bug’s Life.” In her new role, she will lead Pixar’s development group and help the company’s filmmakers create and develop original story ideas.
As vice president of Creative, Shi will work with directors Andrew Stanton, Peter Sohn and Dan Scanlon – who all share the same title – on behalf of Pixar Braintrust to guide the company’s filmmakers as they work on their own projects.
Shi started as an intern at Pixar before becoming a story artist for “Inside Out.” She eventually worked on projects such as “The Good Dinosaur,” “Incredibles 2” and “Toy Story 4.”
The Chinese Canadian filmmaker gained international fame for directing the Pixar short “Bao,” which won the 2019 Academy Award for “Best Animated Short.” She then directed Pixar’s latest feature film, “Turning Red.”
The film was released on March 11 on Disney Plus and follows the story of Meilin “Mei” Lee, a 13-year-old Chinese Canadian girl who turns into a giant red panda whenever she gets overwhelmed by her emotions.
