Pop star Olivia Rodrigo has made history by becoming the first Filipino American to land on the cover of Vogue US.
Vogue US cover: The 20-year-old singer-songwriter flaunts a silver dress on the magazine’s August issue. Rodrigo spoke about her childhood leading up to her acting and music career with Filipino author and writer Jia Tolentino for the cover story
“I had the true pleasure of hanging out with @oliviarodrigo on a rainy spring Saturday in the East Village, just before she got the keys to her new apartment, her SATC era, her whole twenties,” Tolentino wrote in an Instagram post. “The new music is ludicrously good, Olivia is impossibly lovely and it’s a gift to get to be a Filipino writer profiling a Filipino superstar.”
Rodrigo and Tolentino joked about the ethnic stereotype that all Filipinos know how to sing and bonded over karaoke and halloumi eggs. The singer also discussed entering and navigating a new chapter of her life as she moves into her new apartment.
“I wake up and make my little matcha and I make bacon for myself, and then I sit at the piano and try to write something, even if it’s sh*t,” Rodrigo said, noting that she has stopped crowding her life with distractions, such as hanging out with friends every night or clinging to a boyfriend.
New album: Rodrigo, who recently released her latest single “Vampire,” will be releasing her second album “GUTS” in September.
Rodrigo said that her new album is a time capsule into a moment that feels like it’s “about figuring stuff out, about failures and successes and making mistakes.” According to Tolentino, “GUTS” includes two “wrenching, cinematic ballads” and two other songs that are “playful and insouciant.”
“I was under the impression that the younger you are, the more successful you’ll be in the music industry,” Rodrigo said. “I think I believed in these false ideas for a little while.”
However, the singer-songwriter now believes good albums are written through growth, a process that lasts all of one’s life. “The most painful moment of my life turned into my most successful,” she told Tolentino.
Rodrigo, who was named the 2022 Billboard Woman of the Year, was previously nominated for seven awards at the 2022 Grammys, where she won the best new artist and best pop vocal album categories for “SOUR” and best pop solo performance for “drivers license.”
