NewJeans, Ive lead South Korea’s Melon year-end chart

Melon, South Korea’s top music platform, has released its 2023 year-end chart with NewJeans and Ive leading the top 10 spots.
A win for girl groups: Songs performed by girl groups command Melon’s year-end top 50 chart. NewJeans dominates the top 10 with four entries, with “Ditto” at No. 1, “Hype Boy” at No. 2, “OMG” at No. 4 and “Attention” at No. 9.
Ive also led the rankings with “I Am” at No. 3, “Kitsch” at No. 6 and “After Like” at No. 10. Rounding out the top 10 were fellow girl group G(I)-dle with “Queencard” (No. 7), female soloist Younha with “Event Horizon” (No. 5) and the only male singer, Parc Jae Jung, with “Let’s Say Goodbye” (No. 8).
Why this matters: As South Korea’s leading domestic music platform, Melon is considered to closely reflect the country’s musical taste, according to Allkpop. The year-end chart also corroborates the results of recent year-end awards, particularly for NewJeans, which won multiple Daesangs — the highest awards — at MAMA 2023 and MMA 2023.
Other chart toppers: The rest of the chart shows a more diverse mix of acts, with Seventeen subunit BSS leading boy groups at No. 16 with “Fighting,” a track featuring female rapper Lee Young-ji. And despite being less active this year due to their military service, BTS still has the most entries among boy groups — three — with one released in 2017 (“Spring Day” at No. 46).
A number of foreign artists with non-K-pop tracks also join the chart. Charlie Puth leads them with three entries, including “I Don’t Think That I Like Her” at No. 11, “Dangerously” at No. 25 and “That’s Hilarious” at No. 39.
