Netflix released the official trailer for “A Tourist’s Guide to Love,” a romantic comedy set in Vietnam starring Rachael Leigh Cook and Scott Ly, on Tuesday.
The film follows an American travel executive named Amanda (Cook) who travels to Vietnam after an unexpected breakup. While she goes around the country with her Vietnamese tour guide Sinh (Ly), she learns how to take risks and reconsider what it means to love.
Screenwriter Eirene Tran Donohue told Netflix in January that the film’s script is based on a real-life trip she took to Vietnam following a bad breakup
Donohue, whose mother’s family is from the Southeast Asian country, also told Netflix that it was important for her to “tell a story about life now. One that was full of joy and love and celebration.”
“I wanted to change the conversation about Vietnam, to highlight it as a modern thriving country whose stories are worthy of being told,” she continued.
Director Steven K. Tsuchida (“Community,” “Dear White People”) shared that the cast and crew of the upcoming movie, which Netflix says is “filmed entirely on location in Vietnam — one of the first U.S. films ever to do so,” traveled to various places around the Southeast Asian nation.
Some film locations include Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hội An and Hà Giang.
Cook became a ‘90s teen idol after starring opposite Freddie Prinze Jr. in the 1999 romantic comedy “She’s All That.” She has starred in several films and TV series since then, including 2020’s “Love Guaranteed,” her first Netflix romantic comedy.
“A Tourist’s Guide to Love” premieres on Netflix on April 21. Check out its trailer below:
