‘My Dad, the Rockstar’ to premiere at Tribeca Festival — a poignant tribute to Asian dads everywhere

NextShark is proud to announce that
Selected for the International Shorts Competition, the film is set to debut on June 8 as part of Tribeca’s largest-ever short film slate. With more than 93 shorts in this year’s program, My Dad, the Rockstar stands alongside work from over 30 countries in what’s shaping up to be one of the most globally diverse editions of the festival to date.
A personal project from Kim, My Dad, the Rockstar tells a poignant story rooted in love, identity, and legacy. The film pays tribute to immigrant parents, exploring the quieter sacrifices and unspoken dreams that often go unseen in the Asian American experience.

“This was not the easiest production,” Kim shared in a note to the cast and crew. “It was overambitious for the little resources we had, but everyone gave it their all. This film is a dream come true for me.”
The short was produced by a scrappy and passionate team, many of whom volunteered their time and talents to bring the story to life. Despite the challenges, the project came together through sheer dedication—and now finds itself competing at one of North America’s most prestigious film festivals.
As part of the official competition, My Dad, the Rockstar joins the ranks of past Tribeca alumni that include directors like Ryan Coogler, Domee Shi, and David Gelb—filmmakers who have gone on to shape the future of cinema after premiering their shorts at the festival.
Stay tuned for more updates as we celebrate this milestone premiere in New York City.
