Comedian Bobby Lee shares ‘nightmare’ story about a musician confusing him for DJ Steve Aoki

Comedian Bobby Lee recently shared the story of when an up-and-coming musician mistook him for record producer and DJ Steve Aoki.
During Episode 355 of the “TigerBelly” podcast on Thursday, Lee revealed that the incident he dubbed a “nightmare” happened while he and then-girlfriend Khalyla Kuhn were attending a Fourth of July party at an unnamed “famous person’s house.”
According to Lee, he immediately noticed something wrong after an “unknown but talented musician” walked up to him and called him “Steve.” Lee said he corrected the woman by telling her his name was Bobby, but she repeated the name “Steve” once again as she apparently did not hear his response.
The woman reportedly mentioned that her friends told her to approach other musicians and express herself in an effort to make connections. She then said to Lee, “You know, you remixed one of our songs and I just want to let you know that it was really dope.”
Kuhn noted that “old Bob” would have just “gone with it,” to which Lee agreed, saying that his old self would tell himself to “just pretend you’re Steve Aoki and keep going and then just end it and just walk away.”
“I don’t want to embarrass her because she’s now deep into racism,” he added. “I’m trying to change the way I do things.”
Looking at an image of Lee and Aoki together, Kuhn joked, “I think this is probably what confused her. Who is Steve Aoki in this picture?” Highlighting the “obvious difference” between him and Aoki, Lee asked in jest, “So Steve Aoki went on a donut binge?”
“Is that what happened? In six months, he just went to Dunkin Donuts every meal? I mean, come on,” he noted.
Kuhn added that she was proud of the way Lee handled the situation as he tried to make the musician feel OK about the blunder.
“I was like, what angle is he going to take here,” Khun said. “I was at the edge of my seat and you … grabbed her forearm and you’re like, ‘Oh my god, I think you think I’m somebody else nice. I’m not Steve Aoki, I’m Bobby Lee,’ and you said something funny like, ‘I’m so much fatter than him.’”
When Lee eventually walked away, Khun stayed behind to help the woman feel less embarrassed.
Lee later explained that he was actually anticipating getting recognized and being asked for a photo when the woman initially approached him. “I had to go to the car and just vent and can’t believe that happened,” he noted.
While the discussion was lighthearted, the episode wrapped up in a somber tone as the couple announced that they have broken up.
“I just wanted to announce to everybody that Khalyla and I are no longer together,” said Lee, who called Khun the “love of my life,” “my best friend” and someone who “reinvented who I was.”
Despite the breakup, the pair revealed that they will continue hosting “TigerBelly” together.
