First Muslim superhero Kamala Khan debuts in new trailer for ‘Ms. Marvel’

Marvel Studios has released an official trailer for their upcoming series “Ms. Marvel,” which will bring to screens a Muslim superhero for the first time ever.
The new series follows Kamala Khan, a nerdy South Asian American teenager from New Jersey who loves playing video games, writing fan-fiction and most of all, daydreaming of superheroes. Her idol, Captain Marvel, later serves as inspiration for her costume design.
In the trailer, Kamala is seen facing a challenge even the toughest of the superheroes she looks up to would struggle to overcome: high school. She’s already a bit of a misfit when she suddenly finds herself with new, unusual abilities.
Nineteen-year-old newcomer Iman Vellani stars as the titular hero in the latest Marvel series. Just like her character, Vellani is also the daughter of Pakistani Muslim immigrants – though Vellani has grown up in Canada.
The trailer shows Kamala possessing a different set of powers than what avid comic book readers might have expected. Taking the form of a glimmering aura that appears to supercharge her punches, Kamala’s powers enable her to manipulate energy around her using her hands. In the comics however, Kamala is able to manipulate her entire being, changing the size and shape of her body at will.
The series will be available to stream exclusively on Disney Plus starting June 8. It’s only the beginning for Kamala’s character as she is also anticipated to appear in the sequel to the Marvel film “Captain Marvel” which is scheduled for next year. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that she would appear in future films when he announced the show back in 2020.
The unveiling of the trailer comes shortly after the Disney Plus premiere of the animated film “Turning Red,” which was praised for its Asian American representation. The trailer has spurred even more excitement online towards seeing more representation of marginalized groups on screen.
