One Video Perfectly Sums Up Why We Keep Mishearing Song Lyrics
If you regularly mishear song lyrics, like when Taylor Swift sings “got a long list of ex-lovers” in her hit song “Blank Space” and you hear “lonely Starbucks lovers,” you are not the only one.
Linguists call misheard song lyrics mondegreens, according a new video from Science of Us.
One explanation for why mondegreens happen is top-down processing, or when your expectations color your perception. That means relationship naysayers may hear the lyric “I’m a believer” from the Monkees’ song of the same name as “I’m gonna leave her.”
Check out the video to learn more about mondegreens.
