Meet the World’s Youngest Queen

By Carl Samson
The world’s youngest living queen hails from the Kingdom of Bhutan.

She is 27-year-old Jetsun Pema, who took the throne in October 2011.

Jetsun ascended at the age of 21 when she married the “Dragon King,” Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, then 31.

The royal couple, now parents to 1-year-old son Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck, have notable similarities: they both studied in England and share a love of art.

The queen studied international relations, psychology and art history at Regent’s College in London, while the king studied international relations and politics at the University of Oxford.
“She is a wonderful human being, intelligent. She and I share one big thing in common: a love and passion for art,” the previously king said, describing the queen to reporters.

The couple’s final day of wedding celebrations was attended by over 50,000 Bhutanese people. They have also been dubbed as the “Will and Kate of The Himalayas”.

While Jetsun was portrayed as a “commoner,” she actually has ties with Bhutan’s royals.
According to the Washington Post, her paternal great-grandfather was the lord of the eastern province of Tashigang, while her maternal grandfather was the half-brother of the wife of Bhutan’s second king.

As per her Facebook page, she works with organizations involving the environment, health and people with disabilities.

She also supports cottage-based entrepreneurs and the rural economy.

She gave birth to Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck, their first son, in February 2016.

While busy with her royal duties, she happens to be a hands-on mother.

InStyle noted that the queen is “no slouch in the wardrobe department either,” as she often wears bright and traditional Bhutanese clothing but with “a touch of modern style.”
