Meet the Mormon Teen Who Has Survived Three Terrorist Attacks
Coincidental and miraculous: An American teenager has witnessed three major terror attacks within the last three years.
A native of Sandy, Utah, Mason Wells was among the individuals who suffered injuries from the explosion at Brussels Airport in Belgium Tuesday morning. Wells, a member of a group of Mormon missionaries, was at the airport bidding farewell to their fellow missionary, Fanny Rachel Clain. Clain, who is from Montelimar, France, was on her way to her assignment in Cleveland in the United States.
Two other members of their group, Richard Norby, 66, and Joseph Empey, 20, were also reportedly injured by the terror attack. Wells’ father, Chad Wells, informed ABC News that his son suffered a ruptured Achilles’ tendon, shrapnel injuries, as well as second- and third-degree burns on his face and hands.
Unfortunately, this isn’t Wells’ first time being present in the surrounding area during a terror attack. His father said:
“This is his third terrorist attack. This is the third time that sadly in our society that we have a connection to a bomb blast. We live in a dangerous world and not everyone is kind and loving.”
In 2013, Wells and his father were standing a block away from the Boston Marathon finish line when two bombs exploded, killing and injuring runners and spectators. The two were waiting for Wells’ mother, Kymberly, who was running the race. His parents confirmed that their son was also in Paris as part of his mission in November during the terror attacks that took place in November.
Wells’ family are concerned with the teenager’s ability to pursue his dream of joining the U.S. Naval Academy as a result of his injuries. Wells’ aspiration is to serve his country in the military. His father stated:
“The way we get back on our feet after something like this happens is a true test of character. He was blessed significantly by God. We see a blessing by this, not a terrible curse.”
