Jimuel Pacquiao kicked off his boxing career with his first amateur fight win.
On Saturday, March 12, Emmanuel “Jimuel” Pacquiao, 21-year-old son of Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao, 43, and his wife Jinkee Pacquiao, was victorious by decision in his first-ever sanctioned amateur fight over Mexican American opponent Andres Rosales. Pacquiao Jr. now stands at 1-0 in his amateur career.
Pacquiao Jr., who is the couple’s eldest son, was coached by Marvin Somodio, his father’s former assistant for a decade. He also represented the same gym, Wild Card Boxing Club.
“This is only his first amateur fight but he showed me that he has heart. He’ll get better and stronger,” Somodio said of Pacquiao Jr. after the fight.
Manny Pacquiao, who was unable to attend the match, boasted about his son’s win in a heartfelt post on his Instagram account.
“Congratulations to my son [Emmanuel Pacquiao] on fighting and winning his first U.S. amateur fight at junior welterweight! I’m so proud of you. #TeamPacquiao.”
Pacquiao Sr. recently retired from the sport at the end of last year, at the same time he announced he would be running for president of the Philippines.
