Louisiana-style vs. Korean fried chicken: Popeyes plans to open hundreds of locations in South Korea

The American fast food chain Popeyes plans to open hundreds of locations across South Korea after reaching an agreement with Silla Co., Ltd (Silla Group).
Through the official master franchise agreement reached Jan. 4, the restaurant will begin opening new locations this year throughout South Korea. Popeyes’ parent company, Restaurant Brands International (RBI), has plans to build hundreds of locations around the country.
In a joint press release, RBI President David Shear said: “We have strong confidence in the group and are pleased to announce exciting plans to bring our iconic Louisiana-style chicken to one of the largest chicken QSR markets in the world.”
Popeyes, famous for their “Louisiana-style” fried chicken and once-viral chicken sandwich, has more than 3,600 locations in 25 countries. They previously operated locations in South Korea from 1994 – 2020, with over 200 branches running at its most successful point.
Silla Group is a South Korean company with holdings in a variety of industries, including fisheries and food. In the press release, Silla Group Senior Managing Director of the Food & Beverage Division Moon Kyung Lee said, “We are proud to bring the famous Popeyes brand to South Korea and we believe that our guests will love Popeyes iconic Chicken Sandwich.”
