Los Angeles Angels’ Shohei Ohtani hits his first career grand slam

Los Angeles Angels’ two-way star Shohei Ohtani hit his first professional grand slam on Monday night.
The Angels beat the Tampa Bay Rays 11-3 at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, with center fielder Mike Trout also hitting a home run in the sixth inning to score the home team an early 6-1 lead.
Angels first baseman Jared Walsh also contributed a homer in the third inning.
Ohtani hit two homers: the first off Jason Bleeks during the sixth inning, and the second during the seventh when he connected on a 3-1 cutter from Calvin Faucher.
That second HR was the Japanese phenom’s first career grand slam, and the Angels’ third this season.
“Honestly I didn’t know it was my first one. In my head I thought I hit one in Japan, but I guess not,” Ohtani said, as per the Associated Press.
A grand slam takes place when a batter hits a home run with teammates on the first, second and third bases.
The reigning American League MVP added that he did not expect two home runs. He needs one more to become the third Japanese player to reach 100 in the majors.
The Angels so far are 20-11 on the season. They will continue their three-game series against the Rays on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“I’m not having the best offensive year right now but the team is winning, which is the most important thing. We’re going to try to continue the hot streak.”
