Pro Bono Law Firm Alliance to Represent Korean American Sisters Attacked With Cinder Block in Baltimore
By Carl Samson
The Alliance for Asian American Justice, a new pro bono initiative, is representing Korean American sisters who were attacked with a cinder block in Baltimore this week.
The incident, which left the victims with non-life threatening injuries, occurred at Wonderland Liquor Store in the 2000 block of Pennsylvania Avenue on May 2.
What happened: The sisters, 66 and 67, who work at the store, were trying to close before 11 p.m. when Daryl Doles, 50, entered and attacked them with a cinder block.
- The incident was caught in a surveillance video, which shows them struggling against the suspect both inside and outside the business.
- Both women were hit with the cinder block. They were taken to the hospital with bruises and wounds on their heads.
- Doles was arrested shortly after the attack and charged with two counts of aggravated assault.
- John Yun said in the GoFundMe page he had organized that his aunt — the first victim — required 25 stitches on the head. His mother was the second victim.
- The group of more than 70 law firms and large company law departments aims to help victims of anti-Asian hate and prevent further incidents of violence.
- Former U.S. Attorney Robert Hur, currently in private practice, is representing the Korean American sisters through the initiative, reported WBAL.
- Goya Choi, who owns the nearby Forty, Forty Liquor and Beer, told WBAL that Doles came into his store the same night and said “Chinese motherf***er” after being asked to leave.
- Hur said they will continue to work with law enforcement to ensure Doles is brought to justice.
Hur cannot comment on the possibility of a hate crime. The attorney told WBAL he needs to let authorities do their investigation.
The Alliance’s Board of Directors includes Don H. Liu, Wilson Chu (Partner, McDermott Will & Emery), Tai Park (Partner, White & Case), Brian A. Sun (Partner, Norton Rose Fulbright) and Debra Wong Yang (Partner, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher). The group is co-chaired by Debra Wong Yang and Tai Park.
