A video of a homeowner who refused to help her maid from falling off the 7th-floor window of a high-rise apartment building in Kuwait is now making the rounds in social media.
In the infuriating footage, the house helper can be first seen dangling outside the apartment window, while the employer watchesfrom the inside, recording everything as the maid cries for help, SCMP reports.
“Oh crazy, come here,” a woman reportedly said in Arabic in an unworried tone.
“Hold on to me! Hold on to me!” the maid, later identified as an Ethiopian, screamed in fear.
With no intention of saving the maid in danger, the woman backed away from the window. The poor helper then lost her grip and dropped seven stories below. Fortunately, the maid survived the fall.
Kuwaiti authorities have reportedly arrested the employer, who was charged with failing to help her employee. It was not reported, however, what led to the fall and the extent of the maid’s injuries.
According to Human Rights Watch, the country’s harsh labor system, called kafala, has led to numerous cases of abuse and exploitation. In the system, the foreigner workers are often forced to give up rights just to get a work visa in the oil-rich nation.
“I’ve talked to workers who said they had to figure out a way to escape, and scrambled off buildings to do so,” Human Rights Watch researcher Rothna Begum was quoted as saying. “What was shocking about this video is that the employer had filmed it from inside the flat – while she [the worker] is asking for help.”
Kuwait currently employs more than 600,000 domestic helpers, many of whom are from Asian countries.
