Pakistani-American comedian, actor, and podcast host Kumail Nanjiani is reportedly in talks with Marvel to star in the Chloe Zhao-directed adaptation of the comic book “The Eternals,” potentially making him the first Pakistani-American actor to star in a Marvel film.
The 41-year-old Oscar nominated actor is in negotiations with the studio to star alongside Angelina Jolie, who is believed to be playing the role of a more outgoing Eternal named Sersi, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“The Eternals” follows the story of super-powered near-immortal beings known as the Eternals and their counterparts, the Deviants, both of whom were created by cosmic giants called the Celestials. The Eternals first appeared in comic books created by Jack Kirby in 1976 before being revived in a mini-series penned by Neil Gaiman in 2006. The first ongoing series featuring The Eternals started in 2007.
Chloe Zhao, a Chinese director, screenwriter and producer, is set to direct the adaptation. Her first two feature films were met with critical acclaim, with 2017’s “The Rider” picking up nods for Best Film and Best Director at the Independent Spirit Awards.
It is still unclear who Nanjiani will play in the movie. “The Eternals” is one of two Marvel movies that are expected to start filming this year.
