‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Author Kevin Kwan to Get New Comedy on CBS
By Carl Samson
CBS has ordered a new comedy pilot from “Crazy Rich Asians” author Kevin Kwan.
The Singaporean-American novelist continues to ride the success of the 2018 film, which grossed $232 million in global ticket sales.
Kwan and David Sangalli will write and executively produce “The Emperor of Malibu,” a multi-cam show that follows the son of a Chinese billionaire who announces his engagement to an American woman from the East Coast who comes from old money. However, his family — who hails from Shanghai with new money — descends upon the couple to win their son back and test-drive the American dream.
“Three years ago, I came up with an idea for a sit-com. The journey is just beginning, but I’m so thrilled to announce that we are now one step closer to bringing you the #emperorofmalibu,” Kwan wrote in an Instagram post in October.
“The Emperor of Malibu” is the second network pilot to star Asian characters this pilot season, The Hollywood Reporter noted.
Last month, ABC gave the green light to a comedy pilot based on Hannah Simone’s (“New Girl”) relationship with her Indian American father, Deadline reported.
According to Variety, Michelle Nader and Christina Lee will serve as showrunners of “The Emperor of Malibu,” as well as executive producers with Danielle Stokdyk.
Warner Bros TV will produce the show.
CBS has ordered two other comedy pilots alongside “The Emperor of Malibu” — “The Unicorn” from Bill Martin and Mike Schiff (“Fam”) and “Our House” from Brendan O’Brien and Nick Stoller (“Neighbors”).
