UCLA Gymnast Katelyn Ohashi Breaks the Internet After Scoring a Perfect 10
A UCLA gymnastics senior received a perfect score following an upbeat Jackson 5-inspired floor routine at the Collegiate Challenge on Saturday.
Katelyn Ohashi tumbled, flipped and did splits to the tunes of classic R&B and pop hits that included the recognizable instrumentals of The Jackson 5′s “I Want You Back” and Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel.”
Even those who were not gymnastics enthusiasts were still awestruck by Ohashi’s skill and took to Twitter to show their support.
Although her moves may look effortless, it is impossibly hard, according to her coach.
“Every single thing about it including the backward split that she does after her leap pass — it’s insane,” said UCLA Coach Valorie Kondos Field.
It’s not the first time the 21-year-old Seattle native has gone viral for her moves. She earned NCAA floor champion in the 2018 Pac-12 gymnastics championships, where she moonwalked to Michael Jackson and kept an upbeat personality to the delight of the crowd and her team.
This energy was hard earned. Ohashi almost never made it back onto the floor following her decision to stop pursuing her Olympic goals and compete at the collegiate level instead. Gymnastics had worn her down emotionally and physically.
“I was broken,” Ohashi told The Players’ Tribune in August.
This renewed energy for the sport and her passion can clearly be seen in her recent weekend performance, the sixth time in her career as a college athlete where she’s earned a perfect score.
What’s not so perfect? According to a tweet from Ohashi, there’s just a little something that needs to be fixed.
