Beauty Shop Owner Punches Woman in Front of Children in Disturbing Video
A disturbing video of a Black woman being punched in the face in front of an Oklahoma beauty store has outraged many after going viral.
According to Shaun King, activist and co-founder for the civil rights organization Real Justice, the incident took place in front of Jun’s Beauty Supply in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
King explained in his description that a small child, presumably one of the children in the video, walked out of the store with a keychain. The woman allegedly caught the child with the keychain and returned it. However, the man “followed her out of the store harassing her and telling her that she needed to keep a better eye on her kids.”
The woman turns to confront the man as they exchange words. The woman can then be seen turning around to leave while pushing the man’s shoulder. The employee responds by hitting the woman in the mouth.
A woman, the unknown witness filming the scene, notes that the woman is bleeding as a result. King also reported in his Instagram post that the woman who was hit required stitches.
According to Yahoo News, the man in the video was identified as Changseok Jun, the owner of the store.
Sergeant Shane Tuell of the Tulsa Police Department told Yahoo that the incident occurred on Sunday evening and verified King’s report that the child took an item from the store without the mother knowing. Tuell explained:
“Mr. Jun followed the victim outside to confront her, and she threw the item back inside the store, then pushed him in his upper torso as she was leaving. Mr. Jun then punched the woman in the right side of her mouth with his closed fist.”
Jun has since been charged with misdemeanor assault and battery and has a court date scheduled for September 12 where he faces a punishment fine or community service. The victim, whose identity remains unknown, can also sue Jun.
King also noted that this is the second time in the past week a Black woman was assaulted by an Asian owner of a beauty supply shop, though he did not specify which incident he was referring to.
Last week, another incident at a Brooklyn nail salon went viral when a customer refused to pay $5 for a bad eyebrow job resulting in a massive brawl. The local Black community responded by protesting the store.
A similar incident in Canada went viral when nail salon employees locked a customer in the store and called the police when they allegedly refused to pay.
In yet another incident last week that turned violent, robbers were caught on camera assaulting two Asian employees to steal wigs from a beauty shop in Maryland.
People on Twitter and Instagram have since been in a heated debate on who hit who first and whether Jun’s attack was justified or not.
